116. In Sickness, Think And Speak Of God, Not Yourself

Psalm 73,77-78

And I said, This is my infirmity: but I will remember the years of the right hand of the most High.     I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.     I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.   Psalm 77:10-12

In sickness, the tendency is to talk about our symptoms and what we went through so people can commiserate with us. But David says that when he was sick He remembered, meditated on, and talked about what God had done for Him in the past and what He was doing right then. What an example he has left for us to follow. How easy it is to complain when you’re in pain but the Bible says you’re supposed to keep your mind on Christ even in sickness! Easy to say, hard to do. What would happen if you practiced this? Would your sickness seem easier to get through with God's joy in your heart and His praise on your lips? To pretend the sickness isn't there is not what David is saying. He acknowledges that he has an infirmity and often says what it is. You can't lie to yourself and others and say you’re not sick if you are, but you are to use it to bring glory to God, not to bring sympathy to yourself.
